Chapter 105 Definitely a Good Person
All the monsters causing havoc seemed to be creatures one might find in the forest. Animal-type monsters like boars and bears, and a bit unsettling category of creatures like frogs and insects. The possibility of a natural outbreak of these monsters was high.
I was taking separate actions from the elf and demon forces, kicking monsters away. Since it was a covert journey and I didn't want to attract too much attention, and also because I didn't want to be asked about my background, I made sure not to draw too much attention. While trying not to be noticed as much as possible, I plunge into the midst of the horde and go slashing through them all.
-Zuba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba!
As I ran through them, I cut every single one to pieces.
"…Alright."
As soon as I heard various screams of death and blood gushing out from their vital points, I quickly search for the next group of monsters and start running again. There were still plenty of monsters in this city.
After cutting down a few lone monsters while running, I discovered the next group. I immediately rushed in, cut them all down, and as I finish, I hear, "Hey there, swordsman, impressive skills."
My shoulders twitched. Oh no, it seemed like she saw me making those quick kills. And of all people, it was the orange-haired demon military person, whom I really didn't want to be seen by.
"Uh, thank you..."
She came over with a bunch of subordinates in tow. This is bad; what should I do?
"From what I've seen, you don't seem to be a demon or any other sub-race. Your strength is a bit unusual for a human, though."
I felt like I would be asked a lot of probing questions. How could I escape...
"But at the moment, exterminating monsters takes precedence. How about it? Will you fight alongside us? With your skills, you'd be a great asset."
However, to my surprise, she's requesting cooperation. It would be suspicious to decline now, and I might attract more attention.
"Uh, if it's okay with me, I can help..."
I replied with low energy and trying to keep my voice as low as possible. Currently, my character was that of a male swordsman traveling, after all.
"Very well, a good answer. Then let's go at it right away...!"
I joined the orange-haired woman, charging into the group of monsters. Arrows for support were flying from behind, which was a bit reassuring.
Several hours later, it was confirmed that all the monsters infiltrated into the city had been eliminated. However, the inside of the city was filled with monster corpses and blood. Firefighting efforts were ongoing since there were many houses burned down or affected by the battle. There must be a lot of elves who became victims...
Thinking back to the day my village was burned, my heart darkened.
"Thank you for your cooperation, swordsman. Allow me to express my gratitude once again."
The soldier who fought alongside me sought a handshake, and I reciprocated.
Is this person really not a bad guy?
"I am Leah, a direct subordinate of King Seatham of the demon clan."
"Eh, I, uh..."
What alias should I use here? Kirio, maybe...?
"Hey!"
Toka, bad timing.
She arrived with Beato and Mel-chan just when things were settling down.
"Seems like you've got company."
However, Leah's response was just that, showing no surprise or suspicious reaction upon seeing Beato's face.
"Oh, bad timing? I wanted to let you know they're safe as soon as possible."
"Well, it's okay. Thanks, Toka. Thanks for taking care of them."
"I didn't do anything. I just waited with them in a safe place. ...Oh, a demon!?"
When Toka noticed Leah, her expression momentarily shifted to one of vigilance. But she quickly returned to her usual calm demeanor.
"Oh, a soldier from Corcut, huh?"
"Indeed, you're a dwarf. We did something that couldn't be forgotten; it earned the resentment of your kind..."
In contrast, Leah had a slightly subdued expression. It seemed like she felt responsible for the massacre of friendly forces that the Taltus army caused.
"That tragedy was caused by a small faction within our demon army going rogue. However, we, who couldn't stop them due to lack of power, also bear responsibility. No matter what you say, we can't refute it..."
"Yeah, I get it. Blaming you won't change anything. We understand that much."
"Toka..."
Originally, most demons preferred peace and disliked conflict.
Toka knew this very well. She understood that it wasn't the fault of the regular army members, and she didn’t blame them for it.
"Even so, I can't calm my feelings. I'm sorry for not being able to do anything in that situation..."
After bowing deeply, Leah continued, "We are at the camp on the outskirts of the city. If you have any troubles, feel free to come to us."
After informing us of their location, she began overseeing the clean-up with her subordinates.
"...Toka, I'm sure that person is a good one."
"...Yeah, I guess so."
***
This country is called Harnest. Within its vast forested land, there's a nation where elves, with pointed ears skilled in magic and archery, reside. To the north, there's the demon country Corcut, and apparently, there's an active exchange between the two.
I just learned all of this from Toka a little while ago.
"So, this town is called Forestia. It's the capital of this country."
"Oh, really? The capital... So this place is the capital."
I had imagined that an elf settlement was usually a small village nestled in the forest. Compared to that, this town was quite sizable. While Toka explained, we helped clean up the monster corpses.
The golems summoned in large numbers were diligently taking care of the cleanup, so we didn't have much to do.
"But, you know, there have only been elven women around since a while ago, haven't there?"
"Kyrie, don't you know about that too?"
Mel-chan gave me a somewhat exasperated look. My apologies; I'm just a girl from a rural village.
"Elves, you see, are a race where only females exist!"
"Oh, I see."
"You seem uninterested, is it because it was not related to you..."
"...!"
I didn't know why I was being looked at with exasperation. Beato was nodding beside me.
"Uh, um..."
As I was talking with the two, an elven woman approached me. She was the one I first helped. She seemed a bit shy and her cheeks were turning red.
"Thank you for earlier..."
"Don't worry about it. I just jumped in without thinking. More importantly, I'm glad you're not injured."
"Oh... Um, excuse me for asking, but you are a woman, right?"
...Oh no. At that time, I accidentally referred to myself as a woman. I didn't change my voice or anything. This is bad. Did she figure out I'm the Hero...?
"If it's okay with you, could you come to my house? I would like to express my gratitude in many ways..."
"...!?"
At that moment, Beato rushed in, and with incredible force, pulled my arm tightly. Seeing Beato's actions, the elven woman seemed to sense something.
"...!"
No, Beato. With one cheek slightly puffed out, that face she's making. She probably intended to glare, but all I could think was how cute she looked.
"Ah, um, I'm sorry... You already have someone wonderful, right? Please forget what just happened. Well then..."
The older sister walked away dejectedly. I didn't really understand what was going on, but why was Mel-chan sighing?
"It's not good, onee-san. It's not right to toy with someone when you already have a significant other..."
"I don't have one. I don't have a girlfriend."
"...!?"
"Seriously, though, what was that about? I don't get why she looked at Beato and left. I mean, Beato is a girl, right?"
"I did say, Elves are a race with only females. In their culture, both romantic relationships and various other things are done between women. Before I could warn them not to fall in love with you, you already shot an arrow to her heart..."
"~sigh~"
Mel-chan let out a deep sigh, and for some reason, Beato, who puffed out her cheeks even more, hugged my arm tightly.
Hey, did I really do something that bad...?
