Chapter 104 Be a hero once in a while

A box containing the Hero Gift Sphere, brought from the storage facility for artificial hero experiments in Paladis's underground. I was at a loss about how to handle it.

Since it had a label of the 【Water God】, I thought it dispenses water. In that case, it would be perfect for me but this small box just wouldn't open. No matter how I tried, I couldn't open it.

First off, I couldn't find a keyhole. Even trying to force it open or break it didn't budge it. Maybe it's made of a material that repels magic because not even my 【Boil】 could melt it. I thought I had become quite strong, but I was completely helpless against this small box.

"Hey, what's that, onee-san? Could it be an engagement ring for Beato?"

"No, it's not. It's the spoils of war from infiltrating Paladis. It's a box with a Hero Gift Sphere inside."

There's no way it's an engagement ring, so why were you grinning like that, Mel-chan?

"Oh, Hero Gift Sphere. What kind of Gift is it?"

"It's the 【Water God】, a Gift that controls water."

"Oh, that's fantastic! It's a perfect match for you! Our combat strength will see a significant increase!"

I hope so. If it got blown away or dropped, I would be in trouble, so I kept it tucked away at the bottom of my bag. After all, this place was quite high up; if we go a bit higher, we might reach the clouds. Our dragon, from the ground, probably looked like a slightly larger bird.

The day after we left Paladis, we were flying over the Elven Kingdom on the back of a magical dragon. Toka told us that it's a country adjacent to the south of Corcut, but we're just passing through, so I didn't bother asking for details.

Mel-chan, done talking with me, went over to Toka.

"Toka, let's fly even higher! Higher than the clouds!"

"Is that really okay? We won't be able to see what's happening on the ground, and more importantly, it's cold and the air is thin up there."

"Ugh... W-Well, maybe this height is fine after all..."

She's really attached to Toka, that girl. They looked like friends of similar ages.

"♪"

As for Beato, she's been happily looking at the ground from above since earlier. She always seemed like this on the back of the magical dragon—either looking down at the ground or sticking close to me. Well, it's not every day we got a chance to look down from this high up, and her eyes were sparkling.

"?"

Huh, I wonder what's going on. Beato lightly tilted her head, then hurriedly came over to me.

"!"

Tugging at my sleeve, she desperately pointed towards the ground.

"Toka, over there! Around that forest!"

"Alright, what's going on?"

Beato seemed really flustered. From the slightly open area in the forest, there's a large city where flames are rising. And that's not just a regular fire.

"Wow, what's that? Did a horde of monsters appear or something!?"

Yes, a massive horde of monsters was swarming so much that we could see it from here.

"! !!"

Of course, Beato wouldn't be able to ignore something like that.

"Toka, hurry to that city. We'll assist them."

"You're talking like a hero. Got it, hold on tight!"

The wings of the magical dragon transformed, and a tube extended. According to Toka, it's called a booster. The knowledge embedded in the Hero's Gift explained it to her. The machine dragon spewed fire from there, and it accelerated rapidly. Mel-chan clung tightly to Toka, and Beato grabbed onto me.

"I’m going to fly, I’m going to fly~!"

"~~~~!"

This acceleration pressure must be tough for both of them. I wrapped my arms around Beato, supporting her to prevent her from flying off. The magical dragon, now at full speed, quickly arrived over the city.

Elven soldiers were currently engaging the horde of monsters filling the city. Thankfully, they were still holding their ground. However, some of them looked up at us and pointed. They might mistake us for new monsters.

"Hey, Toka. Land us in an open area outside the city, and then take care of Beato. At this rate, the magical dragon might become a target of attack."

"I'd do it even if you don't ask, but what about you, Kyrie?"

"I've got it covered. Just leave it to me!"

We descended to the ground, about twenty meters away from the city. This height was no problem.

"Wait a moment!"

I jumped out from the back of the dragon with my bright red swordbreaker. Right below was a furry bear-like magical beast attacking the Elven soldiers. I infused a bit of 【Boil】 magic into the blade and swung it down.

-Zupaaan!

As I landed, slicing through the surface, the blood and flesh of the creature boiled and splattered.

"Um, who are you?"

"Tell me about the situation rather than asking about me. Is this city still safe?"

If someone suddenly appeared and defeated a magical beast with a single blow, it's only natural to be surprised.

I first wanted to confirm the current state of the battle with the elf sister who seemed surprised.

"Well, yes. Non-combatants are being sheltered in the back of the city, in the residence of our leader. The ones engaging in interception are our elven forces, and—"

Before the sister could finish her explanation, a massive frog-like monster attacked from behind.

However, even before I could intercept it—

-Hyu, dosudosudosu!

Pierced by three arrows that flew in, the monster fell to the ground. An orange-haired, petite demon woman leaped in, holding a spear. She thrust the spear into the monster's skull, putting an end to the giant frog's breath.

"Hyaa!"

The sister, who noticed the monster a beat too late, slumped down in surprise. Is this person okay with this kind of situation?

As for the orange-haired demon woman, she wore the same military uniform as Taltus and the others from the Corcut military.

"...Alright, next, let's sweep away the monsters around here!"

After giving instructions to the subordinates who had loosed arrows, she began defeating the surrounding monsters, not sparing us even a glance. It seemed that the demon was protecting this city. Could it be that they were an unrelated regular army, separate from Taltus? I extended my hand to help up the slumped sister while asking a question.

"Who are those demons?"

"They are the demon forces that I didn't get the chance to mention earlier, responsible for defending alongside us. They happened to be stationed nearby, and we're grateful for their help..."

I see. The elves and demons were jointly engaged in defense. Now that I had grasped the situation, it was time for me to act like a hero and do my best to exterminate the monsters. Additionally, I needed to discern whether those demons were allies or enemies...
